The National Sleep Foundation poll this year looked into the relationship between exercise and sleep and found that people who exercise are more likely to say “I had a good night’s sleep” than those who don’t. They also found that sleep quality seems to improve with the amount and intensity of exercise you do. Non-exercisers had twice the incidence of sleepiness during the day as those who exercise and more than two-thirds of vigorous exercisers say they rarely or never had symptoms of insomnia.
Sleep apnea is a medical condition that causes a person to periodically stop breathing during sleep; nearly half of non-exercisers are at risk of developing it, but the study revealed that the risk becomes much lower in those who do exercise.
The study also found that people who sit down for less than eight hours a day are significantly more likely to describe their sleep quality as “very good” than those who sit down for over eight hours. So if you work at a desk you should try taking frequent breaks to stand up and stretch your legs!
We've been warned before that exercising too close to bedtime can hinder sleep but contrary to that this study has found that in fact exercising at any time is better for sleep than no exercise at all! According to Doctor Max Hirshkowitz “If you are inactive, adding a 10 minute walk every day could improve your likelihood of a good night’s sleep”.
